The Parish of Dunnockshaw is an English parish situated in Lancashire, within the Borough of Burnley. It includes the two small villages of Clowbridge and Dunnockshaw which are situated in a rugged moorland area, 3 miles to the south of the town of Burnley.
It has the distinction of being the smallest parish within the Borough, but also one of the oldest , dating from 1895.
The emblem of Dunnockshaw is the Dunnock, or Hedge Sparrow, the derivation of which is from the Ancient British ‘dunnatos’ meaning ‘little brown one’. Shaw is an Anglo- Saxon term meaning small wood or copse. Together, the name Dunnockshaw can be translated as ‘A small wood or copse frequented by hedge-sparrows’.
Clowbridge Reservoir is situated within the Parish, on the Rossendale boundary.
It is a popular location for water sports and is the home of The Rossendale Valley Sailing Club.
The Parish is rural in nature, surrounded by farmland and high moorland areas, which offer great walks and views. From Clowbridge reservoir, there is easy access to the Dunnockshaw Community Woodland (Forest of Burnley), which has a number of excellent footpaths, bridleways and cycle routes.
